"... Change of clothes, check. Money, check. Food rations, check. Sketchbook, check. Volumes of essential readings, check. Alright. It ought to be time to set off."
Laden down with a gigantic backpack, the short girl plodded away from the building, surrounded by thick groves of botanic life. There was only a short way from her home to the Penifeather Town laboratory, but the overhanging canopy and the tall, pillar-like trees made the path seem unending, winding into the heart of the woods. She trekked on, a book in one hand, the other absent-mindedly stroking an ear. From her belt dangled a Pokéball, whose resident was a Venonat – the parting gift from her parents. They didn't have any Treeckos ready for her – it wasn't anywhere close to their breeding season, you see – but a Venonat would do just as well. She didn't much care, either way.
A chapter later, Xuan found herself standing before the doors to the Laboratory. Suddenly feeling self-conscious, she rapped three times on the door, hoping the Professor was in. Apparently, she was a Pokémorph as well, so this ought to progress smoothly.

The professor was typing up some sort of boring-looking essay. Her dark eyes looked slightly red and there seemed to be bags under both of them. Indeed, it appeared that Professor Ivy had pulled yet another all-nighter, trying to finish her work before that all important deadline. Now, she was hurriedly collating her notes into this essay, which she was email to the other professors. What an exciting job it was.
Alas, a knock on the door forced her to remove her attention from the computer she was working on. A lilac-fur covered hand flicked a few of the stray hairs from her bun out of her eyes. She adjusted her glasses and stood up, taking a hurried sip from the coffee she'd just remembered. Eurgh, it was cold.
Either way, she reached the door moments later, opening it up to reveal the pokemorph. The professor studied the creature for a few moments, her ears twitching slightly. Indeed, the person before her seemed to be a weavile pokemorph.
"Hello, I'm Professor Ivy. Can I help you?" She asked, rubbing her tired eyes.

"Hello, I'm Professor Ivy. Can I help you?"
Likewise, as the Professor looked the girl over, the girl also studied the Professor. With a curious eye, the Weavile 'morph noted the various features of an Espeon in the older woman – was that a tail, actually? How'd she wear clothes? – and raised an eyebrow. Slowly closing the book and lowering her hand to the side, she chewed her lip.
"Um. I apologise for interrupting your work, but –" She stopped; another example of how she failed at communicating with others. How should she phrase this? She didn't want to say something like "Please may I have a starter Pokémon?". It sounded too much like begging. And today, with absolutely none of the excitement a new Trainer ought to have but wagonloads of apprehension, Xuan was irritable. It was rather like rubbing fur up the wrong way, she supposed. But if she proceeded with her usual blunt manner, Professor Ivy might be a tad offended.
"—I wish to obtain my starter Pokémon. May I review the possible candidates you have on hand?" She settled for the direct approach. It sounded like a demand. It was possibly one. Pushing her spectacles further up her nose with her free hand, the 'morph studied the surroundings. Were those bookshelves she saw in the far back?
"And. May I enter the lab? It is rather chilly outside; not surprising, for such a climate, I expect." An attempt at pleasant conversation about the all-encompassing topic of weather failed rather miserably.

The Professor smiled, "Oh, of course. Come in." She laughed to herself, "I'd have thought an ice type like yourself would have no trouble with the cold." Nevertheless, she pulled the door open a little wider, allowing the pokemorph to enter the laboratory.
"You want a starter, you say? Well.. We have quite a few to choose from at the moment." She said, before searching for something on her desk. She found a piece of paper that had seven pictures of pokemon on - the current obtainable starters. The pictures were accompanied by a few pieces of infomation about the pokemon. The girl probably wouldn't need to read the notes. Rather, she seemed to show a great deal of intelligence. At least she was polite.
"Any of those strike your fancy?"

"Oh, of course. Come in. I'd have thought an ice type like yourself would have no trouble with the cold."
Xuan smiled awkwardly. "In fact, I do. It is rather unfortunate." Stepping into the warm air of the interior, she let out a small sigh of vague contentment. Plucking at the drawstrings of her coat, she tightened them, making sure that her face was framed by the fur – it came from an old Arcanine they'd kept, back before they'd moved, she remembered.
"You want a starter, you say? Well.. We have quite a few to choose from at the moment." Xuan nodded. The 'morph watched as the Professor hurried to her desk, rifling through some papers. In the meantime, she wandered over to the shelf of books – it was indeed a shelf of books – and carefully ran a finger over the spine of one. Pokémon Anatomy Sourcebook, it declared in bold golden letterings that were embossed onto the linen covering. She itched to take a good look at it, but thinking that it might be impolite, she let her hand drop, and turned in time to see Professor Ivy return with a sheet of notes. Taking it from the lady, she scanned through the pictures and the brief information accompanying them.
"Any of those strike your fancy?"
Xuan studied the first picture. It was of a Cubone, looking rather proud of himself as he shook a bone in the face of the camera. For some reason, that particular individual caught her attention, and as she scrolled through the facts, she realised it would make a good Pokémon indeed. Strong; loyal; a sense of humour; smart; obedient to a certain extent. Good traits in a starter. Nodding to herself to confirm her choice, she pointed at the Cubone with her thumb: "May I have this individual?"
